Aziz Diaby, the space physicist who wants to promote astronomy in Côte d’Ivoire

Portrait of AIA’s newly elected president, an ionosphere specialist.

After his baccalaureate he studied in Senegal (a degree in physics and chemistry, then master’s degrees in pure and nuclear physics), returned to Côte d’Ivoire in 2012 and began a PhD in space physics focused on the ionosphere in 2015. He has presented his work in Italy, India, the United States and Cyprus, and received two awards.

He explains that he founded AIA because young people were turning away from science, for lack of infrastructure, jobs and practical classes. The plan: school tours, public observations of the Moon and planets, training, lectures, and eventually an observatory. Membership fees are meant to fund equipment.
